Lor Plaosan Temple

Temple Plaosan , also known as Plaosan Complex, is one of the Buddhist temples located in Bugisan village, Prambanan district, Central Java, Indonesia. Candi Plaosan covers an area of 2,000 square meters with an elevation of 148 meters above sea level. The location is at longitude 7° 44' 13 " South and latitude 110° 30' 11.07" East. The Dengok River is located nearby, about 200 meters away.

Plaosan temple was built in the mid 9th century by Sri Kahulunnan or Pramodawardhani, the daughter of Samaratungga, descendent of Sailendra Dynasty, and who was married to Rakai Pikatan in the Hindu tradition. The Plaosan complex is an ensemble of two Buddhist temples, Plaosan Lor and Plaosan Kidul.

Plaosan Lor consists of two main temple and an open hall known as a Mandala. Both temples have an entrance, a gate, and the guardian statue known as Dwarapala. Temple is located on the left (north) is called North Main Temple with reliefs depicting female figures, and the temple which is located on the right (south) is called the South Main Temple with relief figures represent men. In the northern part of the complex, there is still an open hall with several Buddhist statues. Both the main temple is surrounded by 116 stupas and perwara perwara 50 temples, as well as artificial moat.

In each of the main temple there are 6 sculptures / statues Boddhisatwa Dhyani. Although this temple is a Buddhist temple, but the architectural style is a mixture of Buddhism and Hinduism.
